The latest Knights merch drop pays tribute to Doris Self, one of the first female competitive video game players. Self was in her late 50s when she played the game Q-Bert for the first time, and she was hooked.

Self became infamous at her local arcade. Teenagers would bring their friends to challenge her, but quickly found they were no match for the Q-Bert aficionado. Realizing her potential, Doris set her sights on the competitive gaming scene.

In 1984, at the age of 58, Doris set a world record for the highest score of Q-Bert at the Twin Galazies Video Game Masters Tournament – a world championship gaming event. At the time, she was the oldest gamer to hold a global high score for a videogame and was among the few women to set a world championship score.

Doris Self may have passed away in 2006, but her place in gaming history continues on.
